Chapter 18

Jasper strolled through the moonlit woods, snapping twigs off branches with a lazy smirk, thinking about how Ada’s air-kiss had triggered his hunter instincts. His wolf had snarled for him to start the chase early, no matter the protocol, but when the second round of howls erupted from the sidelines, and the other males dashed off—he’d stopped short and smiled. He knew what awaited for him. And it was the kiss of her plush lips, and the sinking in between her soft thighs.

A shuddering groan of anticipation rippled through him.

He would give her time to come to terms with the idea of their joining. She might be high on divilixir, but he wasn’t, and he knew that once she distanced herself from the initial rush, she might think differently. Crimson, Jasper thought differently. The old him would have… the old him?

His thoughts stuttered.

The curse marks burned like fire around his neck, blocking his recognition. He frowned, itching with a flush of irritation. The pain of ignorance was fast becoming worse than the pain of his memories. At least if he knew the kind of fae he wasn’t, then he could work toward being the kind Ada needed. The kind she’d happily accept as a mate.

Rustling sounds in the leaves stopped him. He’d been so lost in his thoughts, he hadn’t noticed he’d walked in on the privacy of a matched couple, tumbling in the leaves beneath a moss-covered tree. The male sensed his approach and shot up with a territorial growl aimed Jasper’s way.

Jasper gave him a casual salute and then kept walking, idly plucking another twig from a blackcurrant bush before lifting it to his nose and inhaling deeply. She’d passed this way. Satisfaction bloomed in his chest.

I’m coming, Ada.

Their bond kept them linked. He could feel her like a beacon of heat—an extension of himself—echoing silently somewhere to the right.

He tsked slightly as he realized she’d strayed from the path.

“Naughty, Ada,” he grumbled to himself.

Hadn’t she learned her lesson with the first wolpertinger? Perhaps he should play a game with her, frighten her and pretend to be the very thing they were warned against. He found a few branches shaped like antlers and held onto them, intending to use them as a wolpertinger disguise. This would be fun.

Although, in all seriousness, she needed marking, sooner rather than later. It was the only way he’d feel satisfied other males would avoid her. His teeth ached, elongating, ready for the task. His cock strained hard against his pants and he subtly adjusted himself for comfort.

Multiple scents of arousal clashed across the winds. Hunters had caught their prey. Every cell in his body cried out to catch his.

You have all night. Relax.

He forced the tension to disperse, but the scent of musk kept sending his inner wolf into a frenzy. Fae everywhere were engaged in lustful activities. As it should be on Lupercalia.

A cry caught on the wind. He stopped, tilted his head and pricked his ears.

Was that…?

Ada? No. It couldn’t be.
